Lessons

The tool lessons are the same jobs as the chart buttons. The wheelhouse notes are teaching examples written for RoguePin. They are not interviews with a working captain.

Wheelhouse notes

Three jobs, in a captain's words

Kelp · Cortes Bank

Work the edge the current is feeding

The outline is a cloud of places the kelp might be, not a promise of one point. I start on the up-current side of that outline, where the current is pushing into the paddies, and I work across it. The bearing on the screen is to the middle. The fish are often on the edge.

Deep drop · Tanner Bank

Start the bait before the boat is on the mark

If the spot is a pin on the chart, I do not start the drop when the boat is already on it. I set the target, read the depth, and start far enough up-current that the bait is on the bottom when it reaches the fish. The number the phone gives me is the start, not the bite.

Anchor · Santa Barbara Channel

Let go before the bow is over the spot

I set for the depth, then I drop so the bow sits on the mark after the boat swings. The stern, where the anchor leaves my hand, is not the spot I want to fish. If I wait until I am already there, I end up down-current of it.
